Assuming you’re on a computer, open up a Notepad or Wordpad and type, “Why do I want to lose weight?” Now start listing off any reason you come up with. They might look something like:
I want to be more attractive to the opposite sex.
I want to prove somebody wrong.
I want to become healthier and stronger.
I want to be able to fit into smaller clothes.
I want to impress somebody.
I want to feel better about myself.
I want to be a model.
Don’t just skip this exercise. The reason why I stress this is because if you start your weight loss journey with no clear purpose, you’re bound to fail. It’s sort of like planning a trip to Florida without a map or directions. Sure, you might somehow make it without a shred of knowledge as to how to get there, but you’re far more likely to end up driving in circles or give up and drive back home–or worse yet, run out of gas in the middle of nowhere.
Having a purpose that focuses on external factors might help motivate you to start a weight loss journey, but without a deep, inner desire to lose weight–without wanting to lose weight for yourself rather than somebody else–your chances of success are slim. By asking yourself why you want to lose weight, you give yourself reasons to continue your weight loss journey even when you no longer want to.
